In this entry, I wish to recount the poignant experience of my husband’s deployment coinciding with the birth of our youngest daughter. Like any mother, I navigate the highs and lows of motherhood, juggling moments of joy and frustration. My days often hinge on the strength of my coffee and the comforting distraction of PBS programming.
As a proud mother of daughters, I relish taking them everywhere. Together, we explore our surroundings, including every aisle of the local Target. They are my constant companions, learning from my actions and experiences. It is essential for me that they understand — truly understand — that they are ENOUGH in every stage of their lives. Even during moments where they may feel overwhelmed, I want them to grasp that they are, and will always be, enough.
The arrival of my youngest daughter, however, presented a unique set of challenges. I faced the bittersweet reality of being alone for this significant moment in our lives. With my husband deployed overseas, we were separated by 6,000 miles and unreliable phone connections, leaving me feeling isolated.
In the midst of my overwhelming emotions, I held my newborn close, feeling the weight of answered prayers and the joy of a healthy birth. Yet, I longed for my husband to share this experience; I wanted him to see her, to breathe in her sweet scent, and to witness those captivating blue eyes. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible.
As I returned home, the reality of my situation set in. I found myself grocery shopping with a 5-year-old, a 2-year-old, and a 5-day-old baby — all ALONE. I endured sleepless nights with three children, managing bath times, bedtimes, playdates, potty training, bills, car repairs, and meals, all under the weight of solitude. Each precious memory and moment felt out of reach, lost in the chaos.
Despite this isolation, I discovered that I was enough. Even in those chaotic and broken moments, I held onto the truth that I was capable, even if I was alone.
This experience embodies the essence of sacrifice. My husband gives up his time and freedom to ensure our safety, a reality often overlooked. While people express gratitude for his service, they might not fully comprehend what he sacrifices — his safety, family moments, and precious relationships, including those with our children.
On the other side of the equation, what does his family sacrifice? We faced the reality of meeting a new family member through a screen, while I struggled with responsibilities that felt insurmountable. My husband left behind a household in need of care, a newborn to nurture, and a wife who was only a week postpartum — all of it done ALONE. This is a story that resonates with many families, yet it often goes unspoken. We endure silently, preparing for the day our soldier returns home. Despite feeling as if we might drown in our responsibilities, we never sink because we are enough.
