Reflecting on the emotional experience of hearing a powerful anthem at a national event can be quite profound. A few weeks ago, I was moved when I heard a beloved artist perform the National Anthem. The song stirs deep feelings within me, not only because of my admiration for the performer but also due to my lifelong respect for our flag, our nation, and those who serve it. My family has a rich legacy of military service; my grandfathers, father, and two brothers-in-law are all veterans. When the anthem plays and the flag waves, we stand proudly with our hands over our hearts.
I also hold immense respect for our police officers. I encourage my children to reach out to them when in need and to trust them, as I believe the majority are dedicated individuals committed to our safety.
While I am not a gun owner, I recognize that many of my friends and family members do hunt and keep firearms for protection, and I respect their rights to do so responsibly.
However, I must express my support for the mission of those who choose to peacefully protest, like Colin Kaepernick. I recognize that our country has significant issues, and the experiences of different individuals can vary drastically. As a privileged white woman, I understand that my life does not reflect the realities faced by many others.
My love for this country compels me to want to see it improve. Similar to how I would care for my sick children, I want to contribute to healing our nation. If peaceful protests spark meaningful dialogue and movement towards progress, I stand firmly behind them.
I also believe in the need for gun control reform. While I wouldn’t advocate for taking away my friends’ hunting rifles, I do support safe storage and proper training for all gun owners. The accessibility of military-style weapons used in mass shootings is a pressing issue that demands change, and I align myself with fellow citizens advocating for the safety of our children.
As a Christian, I embrace the teachings of God and strive to instill these values in my children. I am a strong advocate for the rights of the LGBTQ community, believing that everyone deserves to live free from discrimination and to love whom they choose. I have family members who identify as gay and transgender, and my faith teaches me that God loves them just as they are. We are defined by how we treat one another, and kindness should guide our actions.
I cannot fathom a household where we judge others for their love. It pains me to think about the injustices faced by individuals like Philando Castile and Tamir Rice. My faith and patriotic love for this country inspire me to stand with those who face discrimination and fight for their rights.
I believe in unity, welcoming individuals of all faiths and backgrounds as we strive to create a more compassionate nation. I refuse to be confined to a single label; I am a proud American Christian who enjoys life fully. I may enjoy a beer and occasionally use colorful language, but I also value love, kindness, and recognizing my privileges.
I believe every child deserves a place in this world, regardless of their background or identity. My family and I continuously seek out inclusive communities and places of worship that welcome everyone.
So, when I stand for the flag or pray, please don’t associate me with those who wield the Bible or patriotism as a weapon. That is not my Christianity, nor is it what I believe America represents.
If you want to label me, call me a progressive thinker; I embrace my identity and love for snowy Wisconsin.
