The Unconditional Love of a Dog

The Unconditional Love of a Dogself insemination kit

As I sit here, I find myself gazing at a dog who has been my constant companion for the last six hours. Her soulful brown eyes occasionally flicker towards me, accompanied by deep, dramatic sighs as she glances from me to the window. She fiercely protects our territory, barking at delivery personnel or anyone strolling by with a poodle, yet always returns to me, whether I’m lying down or sitting. Every few moments, she nudges my hand with her tongue, as if urging me to rise.

She’s not just any pet; she is my truest friend.

I must confess, my circle of friends is quite small. While I know many people and have numerous acquaintances, only a handful of them qualify as true friends—those I can share my deepest thoughts with, knowing they won’t judge or attempt to “fix” me. (Believe me, I recognize that I have my share of issues.) However, I never expect any of my human friends to fulfill the role that my dog, Luna, plays in my life right now.

A dog doesn’t mind if you spend half the morning in bed, still in your pajamas by noon, or if breakfast hasn’t crossed your lips. She won’t nag you to get up.

A dog overlooks tear-streaked cheeks and the lack of makeup that leaves you looking as if a truck has hit you (and perhaps smelling like one too). To her, you are simply beautiful.

A dog is indifferent to uncombed hair or the fact that you haven’t showered in over a day. She doesn’t care if you lack the energy to apply deodorant or brush your teeth; she showers you with affection anyway.

A dog won’t judge you for having Nutter Butters and peanut M&Ms for dinner after the kids have gone to bed; she will be overjoyed to share in your snack.

A dog won’t mind if you talk to yourself in the bathroom or laundry room, countering the loneliness of a rough day; she listens with rapt attention, tilting her head in curiosity.

A dog doesn’t care if you lose hours scrolling through your phone, immersed in sentimental stories or reminiscing over old photographs; she simply appreciates your free hand petting her.

A dog won’t judge you when you cling to her, sobbing into her fur as you wrestle with profound sadness and emptiness, especially at night when you long for warmth beside you. She is just grateful to share your bed.

These days, I don’t leap out of bed with enthusiasm. I feel like a shadow of my former self. My friendships have suffered, and my parenting is far from perfect. While some friends may step back during these challenging moments, my loyal companion Luna remains by my side. She is the friend I need, and she consistently encourages me to rise again.

In summary, the unwavering support and love from a dog can be invaluable during tough times. Their companionship provides comfort and understanding that is often unmatched by human relationships.
