My Experience on a Renowned Home Makeover Show (And My Friends Are Still Talking to Me)

My friends definitely anticipated this moment. Without a doubt, they knew I’d be shouting from the rooftops about my appearance on the popular home makeover show “Trading Spaces” when the reboot premiered.

The truth is, aside from an unforgettable birthday celebration in Nashville, being on that iconic show fifteen years ago was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. Unexpectedly thrust into the realm of pop culture, it was more than I ever imagined.

Our Incredible Opportunity

We had the incredible opportunity to participate in Season 4, right when the show was at its peak. The producers, looking to amplify the excitement, dramatically increased our decorating budget from $1,000 to an astonishing $50,000 for their special event, “Trading Spaces: 100 Grand!” It felt like winning the lottery when Ed McMahon showed up with a giant check, and we couldn’t believe our luck.

We spent that weekend with Ty Pennington strumming his guitar and experienced firsthand just how scripted “unscripted” television can be. We even developed favorites among the cast—though I’ll only share my least favorite with you in person (wink).

The Surreal Process

The entire process was surreal. The episode was meticulously planned with little regard for our input; we were more like props than participants. Yet we went along with the flow, completely awed as trucks filled with furnishings, appliances, and plasma TVs rolled up (plasma TVs were a big deal back in 2003).

I distinctly remember crying into my microphone, thinking that unless someone from my high school had just summited Mount Everest, I’d definitely be the star of our upcoming reunion—and indeed, I was.

For two weeks after the reveal, as we settled back into our transformed home, gave away our old furniture, and tried to return to normalcy (while keeping everything under wraps until the episode aired eight weeks later), I found myself overwhelmed with emotion. Each morning, I would descend the stairs, still in disbelief, reliving the excitement and sobbing quietly before my kids woke up.

Managing Chaos

I had to manage my children—ages 2 to 10—while trying to protect our $800 white chairs and a $4,500 silk rug. A side note: 15 years later, although those chairs are no longer pristine (thanks to fabric spray paint!), they’ve held up remarkably well, as has the lamp after several near disasters (boys!). Sadly, the $5,000 plasma TV didn’t survive. I guess there’s only so much four kids can manage, and I’ve been told I’m to blame for that one.

A Monumental Premiere

The show’s premiere was monumental; we appeared on the Today show, made headlines in USA Today, and dominated local news for weeks. After the episode aired, I was even recognized in parking lots. Yes, that was me, and yes, I still use coupons (laughing emoji). Our two-hour segment achieved record ratings for a non-network show, and all this was accomplished without Twitter. It’s hard to believe!

As they’ve been airing classic episodes to promote the reboot, I understand mine may never be shown again. Our episode was part of a phase that brought a fresh twist to the series, which has since seen numerous cast changes. I get it—many beloved shows experience a similar fate. I do appreciate their return to basics, and truthfully, I still have a VHS copy of my episode, so I’m good.

Keeping the Memories Alive

Though we’ve since moved from our “Trading Spaces” house and now rely on rugs from Home Goods, we keep framed photos around to remember our stroke of luck. I even have a fantastic scrapbook that captures those memories.

I’ll probably reminisce about this experience for life, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event that deserves a permanent place in my heart. My friends have learned to tolerate my occasional, enthusiastic mentions. Just the other day, I was chatting with a delightful woman at a restaurant who casually mentioned living near where that TV show filmed. I couldn’t help but beam and say, “That was us!” My husband, however, was less enthusiastic and tried to shush me, but she didn’t even hear, so I let it slide.

I penned my thoughts on this adventure years ago (you can read more here), but thanks to my kids’ wishes, I might need to put a pause on sharing it further. I think I can manage that—though I’m more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Just ask!

Summary

My experience on “Trading Spaces” was an unforgettable adventure that brought excitement and unexpected fame. Despite the scripted nature of the production, I cherished the memories and the transformation of my home. Although life has moved on, the impact of that moment remains, and I still find joy in sharing my story with friends and strangers alike.
