Hey fellow Christians, are you aware that many people perceive us unfavorably?
These individuals, who are simply striving to lead their lives, often find themselves criticized because their lifestyles, beliefs, or choices do not align with the traditional Christian perspective. They are hesitant to embrace a faith that advocates love for one’s neighbor, especially when that love seems conditional upon shared appearances, lifestyles, or beliefs.
Take, for instance, Michael Fields, a prominent evangelical figure and staunch supporter of certain political agendas, who boldly stated that those who identify as “progressive” cannot also claim the Christian identity.
Wait, what? I identify as a Christian. My understanding is that being a Christian means accepting the grace offered through Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, and living according to His teachings. Did I miss a scripture that disqualifies my faith if I support a progressive agenda? Maybe it’s tucked away in Second Corinthians; I’ll have to verify that.
Honestly, I align with progressive values and support candidates who reflect those ideals not in spite of my faith, but because of it.
I advocate for pro-choice political candidates because the sanctity of life must extend beyond birth. How does punishing a woman for her choices align with spreading Christ’s message of compassion and mercy?
I support those who champion universal healthcare, inspired by Jesus’ acts of healing and care for the marginalized. How does denying vital medical care based on one’s financial situation reflect the love and compassion Christ embodied?
I also endorse common-sense gun regulations, as Jesus taught that the peacemakers are blessed. He never suggested arming oneself for violence.
I do not vote for candidates solely based on their Christian affiliation, because goodness and positive change are not exclusive to Christians. Recall the parable of “The Good Samaritan,” where it was not the religious leaders who acted righteously.
If identifying as a progressive means being excluded from the Christian community, I willingly resign from that association. I am tired of self-proclaimed followers of Christ using their beliefs to alienate others.
While Michael Fields may be one of the most vocal figures promoting the idea that progressivism and Christianity are incompatible, I trust there are numerous voices advocating otherwise. May our collective message counter the bigotry and division that tarnish the image of Jesus Christ.
Let’s strive to embody love and inclusivity in our faith.

Summary:
The perception of Christians as unkind arises from a disconnect between their professed beliefs and their actions. Many feel alienated by a faith that preaches love but often falls short in practice. Advocating for progressive values aligns with the teachings of Jesus, emphasizing compassion, care, and inclusivity.
