Why We Chose Rats as Pets During the Pandemic

During the pandemic, many families have turned to adopting dogs, but my partner and I found ourselves drawn to a different kind of pet: rats.

As self-proclaimed dog enthusiasts, particularly fans of Labrador Retrievers, we previously enjoyed the companionship of our chocolate lab, who is particularly fond of my partner, and our yellow lab, who has a special bond with our twelve-year-old son. Our nine-year-old daughter, however, has been persistent in her quest for her own furry friend. “Maybe a goat, Mom?” she suggests eagerly.

My partner quickly dismisses reptiles—his aversion to anything scaly is well-known. Cats are out of the question due to my allergies. In our suburban environment, we were left exploring smaller animals—guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, and yes, rats.

The Challenges of Other Small Pets

While guinea pigs are sociable and friendly, their larger size and messiness can be a challenge. Hamsters, though adorable and low-maintenance, often bite due to poor eyesight and their nocturnal habits make them unsuitable for a light sleeper’s room. Rabbits are undeniably cute and soft, but their delicate digestive systems and high activity needs mean they require vast spaces to thrive. They also have a penchant for chewing through household items, which can be troublesome.

Why Rats?

Thus, we found ourselves considering rats. At first, the idea might provoke a shudder, but pet rats, often called fancy rats, are remarkably different from their wild counterparts. These creatures are often likened to the dogs of the rodent world, exhibiting the ability to learn tricks and respond to their names.

Pet rats are surprisingly clean and do not emit unpleasant odors. They can be housed in a cage with a simple cardboard litter box, which requires changing just once or twice a week. Their lifespan is relatively short—about two to three years—making them a manageable commitment. Yet, for some, the mere notion of owning a rat, regardless of their intelligence and cleanliness, remains unappealing, especially when faced with the sight of their long tails.

The Rat Community

There’s a thriving community of “ratfluencers” on social media, showcasing the charm of these pets. Ratteries, akin to breeders for dogs, offer fancy rats in a rainbow of colors and patterns. When I reached out to a local rattery, I learned that they only sell rats in same-sex pairs, as these social animals thrive in companionship.

However, the process of adoption can be thorough, complete with waiting lists and vetting processes akin to those at dog shelters. Our search for a rat from Craigslist raised concerns about the knowledge of sellers regarding rat care. Pet stores, too, are often not ideal, as their rodents might lack adequate socialization.

Finding Our New Pets

Fortunately, we discovered a wonderful rescue organization nearby. They foster various animals, including the fancy rats we were interested in. Upon visiting one of the foster caregivers, we met a delightful group of young rats. My children instantly connected with two five-month-old sisters who had recently been surrendered. These affectionate creatures quickly charmed their way into our hearts as they playfully explored my children’s shoulders.

The initial setup, including a spacious cage, bedding, and toys, was quite affordable, totaling under $300. The adoption fee was a mere $20 for the pair. Their dietary needs are also manageable, consisting of inexpensive pellets and some fresh produce.

The Joy of Pet Ownership

The joy my children have found in caring for their new pets—creating play areas and bonding—is immeasurable. Although their time with us is limited, the experiences we’ve begun to share are invaluable.
