10 Things This Suburban Woman Doesn’t Need from the President

10 Things This Suburban Woman Doesn’t Need from the Presidentself insemination kit

Dear Mr. President,

As a suburban woman, I find myself in the demographic you’ve been courting, urging us to support you. Unfortunately, I cannot and will not do so. Here are ten reasons why:

  1. I don’t need you to defend my neighborhood. I’m more concerned about the overt racists you’ve emboldened than any so-called “urban” threats from elsewhere.
  2. I don’t need you to protect our nation’s heritage. I fear a country that fails to confront its past more than I do the removal of monuments that shouldn’t have been honored in the first place.
  3. I don’t need you to “bring my husband back to work.” It’s not the 50s anymore. I need you to manage the pandemic effectively to help recover jobs for everyone, especially women who have been hit hardest by COVID-19 layoffs.
  4. I don’t need you to mandate school openings. I need a comprehensive national strategy for COVID testing and mitigation to ensure schools can open safely and remain open.
  5. I don’t need you to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court just for the sake of gender representation. I want a justice who will uphold reproductive rights and promote progress and equality through a thoughtful interpretation of the Constitution.
  6. I don’t need you to offer a mythical healthcare plan that will protect pre-existing conditions. I need you to support the existing policies that safeguard my healthcare.
  7. I don’t need you to have the eloquence of past leaders. I need you to stop the misogynistic rhetoric aimed at women who challenge you, teaching my daughter to stand strong against such behavior.
  8. I don’t need you to be a scientist or a medical expert. I need you to listen to the experts and act on their advice.
  9. I don’t need you to sugarcoat the truth to prevent panic. I need honesty, especially in times of crisis.
  10. Lastly, I don’t need you to point fingers at Obama, Hillary, or anyone else for your challenges. As women, we know that complaining is unproductive. It’s time to take responsibility and govern effectively.

So, Mr. President, despite your pleas, I won’t be voting for you. There’s at least one thing you can’t take from me: my vote.

Sincerely,
A Suburban Woman Saying No
