A woman has filed a sexual assault lawsuit against a former police officer involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor, alleging a pattern of predatory behavior. Brett Hankison, who was dismissed from the Louisville police department after his role in Taylor’s death, is facing serious allegations of sexual assault months after another woman accused him of rape.
Details of the Allegations
In June, Margo Lane recounted her trauma on social media, detailing an incident from 2018 when she was 22. She claimed that Hankison, then 42 and working security at a bar she frequented, offered her a ride home after she had been drinking. Feeling secure because he was an officer, she accepted. However, after dropping her off, Hankison allegedly entered her home without permission and assaulted her while she was unconscious. The lawsuit describes the incident as violent and traumatic, leaving her emotionally and physically scarred. Lane expressed her fears of retaliation for reporting the assault, questioning who would believe her against a police officer.
Other Victims Speak Out
Lane’s experience is echoed by other women. Emily Rivers shared her own frightening encounter with Hankison, stating that he made unwanted sexual advances towards her while driving her home from a bar. Though her friend reported the incident to the police, no action was taken.
The lawsuit filed by Lane also includes testimonies from eight other women who reported similar misconduct, primarily involving Hankison offering to drive them home from the same bar. Notably, Hankison has faced multiple allegations of sexual abuse in the past, yet none resulted in disciplinary measures from the Louisville Metro Police Department. According to the lawsuit, there was even an investigation into Hankison’s alleged misconduct concerning demands for sexual favors in exchange for not pursuing charges against a woman.
Current Legal Status
Currently, Hankison remains out on bail while awaiting trial related to the charges of “wanton endangerment in the first degree” in the Taylor case, where he is accused of endangering the lives of nearby residents. However, no charges have been brought against him or the other officers for Taylor’s death.
