On what would have been Chadwick Boseman’s 44th birthday, Disney+ has unveiled a heartfelt tribute to the late actor through a new Marvel Studios intro for Black Panther, exclusively available on the streaming platform. This tribute was hinted at by Disney Chairman Bob Iger just a day prior to its release.
“To all fans of #BlackPanther: watch the film on #DisneyPlus late tonight, for a special tribute to someone that was and will always be near and dear to our hearts,” Iger shared on Twitter.
The updated Marvel Studios logo features clips of Boseman from notable films including Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, resonating deeply with fans who cherish his legacy. Disney+ had previously honored Stan Lee in a similar fashion by modifying the opening logo for Captain Marvel following his death in November 2018.
Boseman passed away on August 28 after a prolonged battle with colon cancer. He was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, the same year he debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America: Civil War. Disney has since paid tribute to the beloved actor in various ways, including the documentary “Chadwick Boseman: A Tribute For a King,” which aired on ABC on August 30 and remains accessible on Disney+.
In addition, Disney showcased a striking mural at Disneyland depicting Boseman as King T’Challa, performing a Wakanda salute alongside a young boy in a Black Panther mask. The child’s appearance suggests he too is battling cancer, mirroring the struggle that Boseman faced. “This one is special,” remarked the artist Nikkolas Smith, who created the mural. “My King Chad tribute is now on a wall on display at Downtown Disney.”
Black Panther II is set to be released in theaters on May 6, 2022, featuring returning stars such as Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Martin Freeman, and Angela Bassett.
