Alex Rivers, the Oscar-nominated star known for roles in films like Sunny, Strike, Mind Bender, and the acclaimed series The Cosmic Order, took to Instagram today to announce that he is transgender. Alongside a heartfelt note, he expressed his desire to advocate for the trans community.
“Hello friends, I am thrilled to share that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they, and my name is Alex. I feel fortunate to be able to express this. To be present. To have reached this point in my life,” he wrote.
Alex conveyed immense gratitude to those who have supported him throughout his journey. “I cannot articulate how extraordinary it feels to finally embrace myself and pursue my genuine identity,” he shared. He mentioned feeling endlessly inspired by others in the trans community. “Thank you for your bravery, your kindness, and your relentless efforts to make this world more inclusive and compassionate. I will offer my support and strive for a more loving and equitable society.”
He has updated his social media to reflect his new name and is using both he/him and they/them pronouns, identifying as transgender and non-binary. “I also ask for understanding,” he continued. “My happiness is genuine, but it is also delicate. Despite feeling profoundly joyful right now and recognizing my privileges, I also carry fear.” Alex highlighted the pervasive hate, jokes, and violence often directed at the transgender community. “The discrimination faced by trans individuals is widespread, insidious, and cruel, leading to devastating consequences.”
Recently, fellow actor Lila Monroe revealed she was a victim of a transphobic attack in a park, underscoring the ongoing dangers faced by trans individuals. “It’s not safe in the world,” Lila stated in her video. “I try not to dwell on it, but the reality is that being trans can be perilous.”
“I cherish being trans. I cherish being queer,” Alex expressed. “The more I embrace myself and fully accept who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart expands, and the more I flourish. To all trans people who endure harassment, self-hatred, abuse, and the threat of violence daily: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything within my power to make this world a better place.”
