Officer Michael R. Thompson tragically passed away on Thursday night after sustaining injuries during violent confrontations with pro-Trump demonstrators. Over a day after supporters of the former president attended a rally where he encouraged them to head to the Capitol and “stay strong,” Officer Thompson, injured amidst the chaos, succumbed to his wounds.
According to a statement from the Capitol Police Department, Officer Thompson, who had served since 2009, was involved in the unrest at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. He was injured while engaging with the rioters and later returned to his division office, where he collapsed. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he did not survive.
