The beloved host of Jeopardy!, Alex Trebek, passed away on November 9, 2020, after bravely battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer for a year and a half. Recently, the show aired its final episodes featuring Trebek, alongside a heartfelt farewell from its producers.
On Friday evening, Jeopardy! shared a tribute video celebrating Trebek’s incredible 37-season tenure as host. The episodes that aired this week were filmed in October, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Jeopardy! without Trebek at the helm. “Simply the best,” the show’s social media post read, accompanied by a 90-second video showcasing Trebek’s memorable moments. “Thank you, Alex.”
Set to Hugh Jackman’s rendition of Peter Allen’s “Once Before I Go,” the video takes a lighthearted look at Trebek’s career, filled with dancing, costumes, and a final glimpse of his iconic mustache. One of the standout moments features Trebek humorously telling a young contestant, “You really make me feel inadequate,” to which she sweetly replies, “Sorry about that.” The video also includes clips of Trebek walking on set without pants, arm wrestling a contestant, and using a bullhorn during a live show. As viewers watch, they hear Trebek saying, “I don’t dance,” while the video playfully shows him dancing through the years.
The laughter is tinged with sadness as Jackman sings poignant lyrics about saying goodbye, reminding viewers of the tremendous legend that has been lost.
Starting next week, Jeopardy! will transition to a series of interim hosts, beginning with champion Ken Jennings. While it’s no easy task to follow in Trebek’s footsteps, Jennings shared a fun rapport with Trebek during his time on the show.
The final episodes featuring Trebek commenced on Monday, during which he encouraged viewers to support those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re trying to build a gentler, kinder society, and if we all pitch in just a little bit, we’re going to get there,” Trebek expressed. His final episode was particularly emotional, as he signed off with, “See you again next week,” unaware it would be his last.
Trebek revealed his cancer diagnosis during a March 2019 broadcast, stating, “Just like 50,000 other people in the United States each year, this week, I was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. Now, normally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m going to fight this, and I’m going to keep working. And with the love and support of my family and friends and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rates statistics for this disease.”
He will be missed forever.
