“I can’t believe we did it, Joe.”
When I heard those words from Kamala Harris, a wave of emotions washed over me. It was a moment I didn’t realize I needed. We did it. While she was addressing Joe Biden about their election victory, it resonated with me on a personal level. We did it.
We, as Black women. Kamala Devi Harris has made history as the first Black woman to become Vice President of the United States, and she is also the first woman of Indian descent to hold this esteemed position. This is a moment I wasn’t sure I’d witness while I could still fully appreciate it. This morning, I sat in my room, watching a Black woman take the oath of office administered by another remarkable woman of color, Justice Maya Torres. As she began her oath, tears streamed down my face. We did it.
As a Black woman in America, I am acutely aware of the weight we carry. From the very beginning of this nation, we have often been disrespected and overworked. Yet, despite the challenges, we continue to rise and strive for excellence. It’s never an easy path, but we understand that when one of us succeeds, we all succeed. If that means pushing against seemingly insurmountable odds, then that’s exactly what we will do. Kamala Harris embodies years of perseverance. She is a testament to how far we’ve come, and a reminder that there’s still a long way to go.
Kamala Harris represents the hopes and dreams of every Black woman who came before her. As enslaved women toiled in the fields and cared for others’ children, they dreamed of a life that held real meaning. They envisioned a legacy that extended beyond their immediate circumstances. As Black women marched alongside their white counterparts, they voiced their struggles, only to be silenced. Yet, they continued to dream of equality. As they finally stepped into the light, they aspired for even more. Kamala stands on the shoulders of women like Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Michelle Obama—women who paved the way for her and for all of us. She is the dream that was long deferred, now inching closer to reality.
I knew watching Kamala Harris take the oath would be significant for me, but I didn’t fully grasp how profound it would feel. When she placed her hand on that Bible, I could feel a surge of emotions. We did it. The tears welled up before she even spoke her first word. I understood the enormity of the moment. With those words, she was showcasing what Black women are capable of achieving. We are more than society often assumes.
Black women are the backbone of this country, and now we have someone to point to and say, “Look at what we can achieve.” We are more than stereotypes or overlooked individuals. Black women are a powerful force, and it’s high time the world recognizes that.
When I see Kamala Harris at the podium, I see all the Black women who have shaped my life—my mother, grandmother, aunts, and cousins. I see myself and my friends, all of whom are fighting for our rightful place in this world. I also see my nieces, the daughters of friends, and every little Black girl who is still discovering her potential. They now know that there are no limits to what they can achieve. I hope they look at her and think, “Because of her, I can too.”
What’s truly inspiring is Kamala Harris’s awareness of her representation. You can see the light in her eyes, the way she acknowledges, “I see you, Sis. This is for you.” Standing next to Justice Torres, with her partner Alex by her side, her respect for all the women who came before her shines through. She embodies the dreams of those who have fought for justice, as well as the hopes of young girls everywhere. She is a dream realized, and those dreams no longer have to be postponed.
