When the then-President-elect Joe Biden revealed his intention to nominate Janet Yellen as the secretary of the treasury, he jokingly suggested that Lin-Manuel Miranda, the genius behind Hamilton, should compose a musical tribute to her. Fast forward a few weeks, and that whimsical notion has transformed into reality.
Biden mentioned, “We might have to ask Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the musical about the first secretary of the treasury, Hamilton, to write another musical for the first woman secretary of the treasury — Yellen.” While Yellen herself may not have requested a song, Dessa, an artist who contributed to The Hamilton Mixtape, has made it happen.
The Creation of “Who’s Yellen Now?”
Marketplace commissioned Dessa, a member of the hip-hop collective Doomtree, to create a song celebrating Yellen. With punchy lyrics like, “But here comes Yellen with that inside voice/Never mind the mild manner, policies make noise,” it’s clear that the track is bound to be a hit.
Dessa shared that she immersed herself in Yellen’s past speeches and photographs while crafting the song. “I read a lot about her to make sure that she was somebody who I’d like to send up,” she said, expressing her enthusiasm for becoming a fan of Yellen. Collaborators Lazerbeak and Andy Thompson also drew inspiration from Miranda’s work, with Miranda himself later acknowledging the tribute on Twitter.
Historic Nomination
Recently, the Senate Finance Committee unanimously endorsed Yellen’s nomination, and she is poised to become the first woman to hold the Treasury secretary position in U.S. history, as well as the first person to have occupied all three prominent economic roles: chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, chair of the Federal Reserve, and head of Treasury.
“The three of us who worked on this song … I don’t think we’ve ever had so much fun,” Dessa noted. The song titled “Who’s Yellen Now?” is now available on various streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
