Champ & Major Biden Have Finally Arrived at Their New Home
The Biden family has reunited with their beloved German Shepherds, Champ and Major, who have officially made their way to the White House just days after President Biden took office. Notably, Major holds the distinction of being the first shelter dog to reside in the White House.
The two dogs are currently exploring their new surroundings and are likely to enjoy full access to the house, as they certainly deserve it. The Bidens had moved into their new residence last week and decided to wait a few days before bringing their furry companions from Delaware.
“The First Family wanted to get settled before bringing the dogs down to Washington from Delaware. Champ is loving his new dog bed by the fireplace, and Major is having a blast running around on the South Lawn,” a spokesperson for First Lady Jill Biden shared with the media.
Champ joined the Biden family in late 2008, just before they moved into the vice presidential residence. In 2018, the family expanded to include Major after adopting him from the Delaware Humane Association. Just earlier this month, the shelter and Pumpkin Pet Insurance even hosted a virtual “Indoguration Party” to celebrate Major’s arrival.
The return of dogs to the White House is a welcomed change, as the country has been without a presidential pet for four years. Former President Donald Trump was the first in over a century to not have a dog in the White House, stating during a rally in 2019 that he “wouldn’t mind having” one, but simply “didn’t have any time.”
The tradition of having pets in the presidential residence goes back to Thomas Jefferson, who had a mockingbird and even a couple of bear cubs during his time. Imagine the fun that must have been!
For those who prefer cats, Jill Biden has mentioned her desire to adopt one, expressing her love for having animals around. White House press secretary Tara Jenkins humorously noted that the announcement of a cat would certainly capture the internet’s attention.
As President Biden embarks on his first year in office, let’s hope the White House will be filled with even more furry friends, bringing joy after the challenges we’ve all faced.
