Briana Smith is breaking barriers in the racing world. In 2016, at the age of 27, she became the first Black woman to join a NASCAR pit crew, and now she has achieved another milestone as NASCAR’s inaugural Black female tire changer. “I feel like God chose me for this role,” Smith said about her groundbreaking position in the NASCAR crew. “It requires strength, especially considering NASCAR’s history and the usual faces seen on the track. Initially, I was a bit anxious about how I would be perceived, but I realized that someone had to step up, and I was ready to take on that challenge.”
Participating in NASCAR’s “Drive for Diversity” program, which aims to recruit and train minorities and women in racing, Smith stood out as the only woman during the tryouts for a pit crew position. It was here that she discovered her passion for tire changing. Shortly after, she was invited to join the NASCAR pit crew member program.
Three years later, in 2019, Smith made history again by becoming the first Black woman to pit at the Daytona 500 race. In 2020, she received the crew member award at the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Awards Ceremony. This year, she has taken on the role of tire changer for the No. 51 Chevrolet at Rick Ware Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Recently, she was joined by fellow teammates Mia Johnson and Lila Thompson as they were among the only women participating in the Daytona 500. “It’s wonderful to see other women reach out to me, asking, ‘You’re living my dream, how can I join?’” Smith shared. “More people are noticing my journey and want to be a part of it too. I hope to see many more women in this sport in the future.”
As a tire changer, Smith is responsible for quickly removing and replacing lug nuts on tires, as well as handling and cleaning the tires on race day. Her speed has impressed many. “Some doubted my longevity in this role, saying I wouldn’t last long,” she remarked about the sexism she faces. “But those comments only fuel my determination to succeed further.”
