A mother from Pennsylvania is facing serious allegations after reportedly using deepfake technology to create and distribute manipulated images and videos of her daughter’s cheerleading competitors, known as the Victory Vipers. The accused, identified as Michelle Turner, is said to have sent these altered materials to the teenagers and their parents, as well as gym owners.
Turner is charged with three counts of cyber harassment of a minor and three counts of harassment for allegedly creating fake nude images of the girls, showing them consuming alcohol and vaping, and even sending a threatening message to one girl suggesting she should end her life. Deepfake technology, which allows individuals to superimpose one person’s likeness onto another’s image or video, has raised significant concerns about its accessibility and potential for misuse, as noted by local authorities.
“Such technology is frighteningly easy to use and readily available,” remarked district attorney Jack Rosenthal.
Turner’s attorney, Sarah Lee, stated that Turner denies all accusations and plans to challenge the evidence presented against her. The situation escalated after a parent of one of the victims contacted local law enforcement, claiming that her daughter had been receiving harassing calls and texts, some of which included messages urging her to take her own life.
As the investigation unfolded, two other parents reported similar harassment involving their daughters. Authorities executed search warrants leading to the recovery of multiple devices from Turner’s home, revealing direct links to the harassment.
Turner was arrested and later released, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 5.
