‘Nature’s Cereal’ Is the New TikTok Food Craze, and My Family Can’t Get Enough

Last year, my daughter stumbled upon a whipped coffee recipe on TikTok that turned out to be a lifesaver during the initial days of quarantine. After that, we dived into the bizarre world of Hot Cheetos-covered pickles, which quickly became the kids’ favorite snack throughout the summer. Most recently, we savored the now-iconic Baked Feta Pasta, which was a huge hit. So, it’s no surprise that I’ve swapped my cookbooks and Pinterest boards for TikTok trends, all in the name of family bonding over meals.

When my daughter shared a clip of Lizzo enjoying a bowl of berries mixed with coconut water—dubbed Nature’s Cereal—we knew we had to give it a try. Despite having never tasted coconut water, we’re all fans of coconut milk and go through berries at lightning speed in our home. Even if this cereal turned out to be bland, I figured the ingredients would still get devoured.

Upon arriving at the grocery store, I was disappointed to find there were no pomegranate seeds—the key ingredient. I’m not sure if it was due to being in the northeast in March or if they were simply out of stock. Regardless, I made the best of it, opting for raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries instead. My daughter insisted on the “good” coconut water, whatever that meant, so I grabbed a can and headed home, eager to see if this TikTok creation would live up to the deliciousness of the cheesy pasta.

Yes, it’s just fruit, coconut water, and ice cubes, but wow, it was delightful! Here’s why I loved it:

  1. My kids adored it. Healthy eating can be a struggle for any parent, so this was a win.
  2. It was refreshingly delicious and perfect for summer. Surprisingly, it was also quite filling. I expected to feel deprived, but it was genuinely nourishing and visually appealing.

Nature’s Cereal can work as a breakfast option on its own or alongside eggs, and it even makes for a healthy dessert. However, if you think it will replace your sugary cereals or beloved granola, think again. We still enjoy our crunchy cereals around here.

If you approach it as a “naked” or deconstructed smoothie—much less effort and a healthier snack—you’ll likely enjoy it. At first, I hesitated to add the ice cubes, fearing they might dilute the flavor, but I was mistaken. The ice keeps the coconut water refreshingly cold, enhancing the taste.

I’m looking forward to trying this with pomegranate seeds once I can find them (I’ve heard Trader Joe’s usually stocks them, but it’s a 45-minute drive for me). That said, even without them, this snack was a hit in our household. As summer approaches, I’ll definitely keep the ingredients on hand since my teenagers were excited about it. I even tried it the next day with granola on top, and it was even better! Who says you can’t combine Nature’s Cereal with regular cereal? There are no rules here!
