In honor of Women’s History Month, the long-awaited statue of Ruth Bader Ginsburg has finally been unveiled. This bronze sculpture was revealed on March 12, just three days ahead of what would have been the late Supreme Court Justice’s 88th birthday, in her native Brooklyn.
Billie Jo Parker, a legendary figure in sports and advocacy for equality, expressed her delight on social media, stating, “My hero, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, now has the statue in Brooklyn that she truly deserves.”
Towering at 7 feet and weighing in at 650 pounds, the statue was crafted by Australian artists Gillie and Marc. It features two steps at its base, symbolizing Ginsburg’s ascent to the U.S. Supreme Court. “The two steps signify the Supreme Court and her remarkable journey to reach it. This piece is meant to inspire the public to stand alongside Ruth and draw motivation from her fight for equal rights,” the artists explained.
Erica Roseman from Concrete Communications NYC emphasized, “We encourage everyone to step onto the pedestal and stand with Ruth to draw inspiration from her legacy and all she’s accomplished for equality.”
Borough President Alex Johnson remarked during the unveiling that this statue will ensure Ginsburg’s legacy endures for future generations. “Ruth Bader Ginsburg spent her life dismantling barriers and advocating for a fairer nation,” he tweeted. “Her powerful legacy has inspired New Yorkers across all generations, and this statue will carry her memory forward.”
New York’s Governor, Thomas Green, announced the statue’s installation in September, highlighting it as the state’s tribute to Ginsburg’s life and a physical reminder of her significant contributions. The timing was deliberate; the statue was unveiled just days before her birthday, March 15. Shortly after, there was a separate ceremony to rename the Brooklyn Municipal Building in her honor.
“Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg recognized the women before her and fought for those to come,” stated Vice President Linda Harris. “On her birthday, we celebrate her life and legacy, recommitting ourselves to the pursuit of equality and justice for all.”
Born in Brooklyn on March 15, 1933, Ginsburg grew up in the Flatbush neighborhood. The statue is located at City Point Brooklyn, a mixed-use space roughly half a mile from the Brooklyn Bridge, and is open to the public, though reservations are necessary to view it.
