My youngest, Jake, is 17, but you’d swear he was already 25. Almost six feet tall, he seems to be racing through life. A junior in high school, he juggles a job at the local grocery store, drives, has a girlfriend, stays fit at the gym five times a week, and loves snowboarding and fishing. Most of his downtime is spent sleeping and eating. Whenever I manage to catch a glimpse of him, he might offer a few words, but there’s no guarantee. It’s like watching a train leave the station, gaining speed with each passing moment.
While I feel a sense of loss, I’m also excited and honored to witness his journey, even if it’s from afar. Jake is fiercely independent and can’t wait to turn 18 and spread his wings. He even brought up emancipation once, which genuinely startled me. Thankfully, he decided to hold off on that since college is just around the corner.
I miss our time together. When his older siblings, who are 18 and 19, drifted away from spending time with me, I still had “the baby.” There’s a different bond with the youngest — you find yourself cherishing the simplest interactions. You slow down, put aside your “to-do” list, and savor each moment. Time with Jake seems to slip away so quickly.
He asks for very little these days, maybe a favor to book a doctor’s appointment or grab some toothpaste. Naturally, I oblige with enthusiasm. But last week, everything changed when his phone broke — and it was like winning the lottery for me. He was frustrated and reluctant to spend his own money to fix it for the second time. I remembered we had insurance and told him he could use it, but of course, he needed me—the account holder—to accompany him.
This was my lucky break! We headed to the store, and as fate would have it, we faced a long line and a new employee who couldn’t assist us. It meant more time together. We spent over 30 minutes in the car listening to his playlist, discussing his siblings, and he even shared stories about his job. It felt like we were reconnecting for the first time in ages, all thanks to a broken phone.
Next, we were directed to a different location to have the phone repaired while we waited. Another 30-minute drive led to more music, more conversation, and more shared moments. When we arrived, we were told there would be an hour-long wait. Under normal circumstances, Jake would have been annoyed, but I would have waited for hours just to spend time with him.
We found seats next to each other, and I pulled up a photo from his 4th birthday at Disneyland. We reminisced about that day, laughed, and scrolled through old family photos on my phone. It was a delightful trip down memory lane.
Suddenly, our name was called, and I knew our time together was about to end. After signing the paperwork, I was thrilled at the thought of spending another two hours with my favorite 17-year-old! But then came the moment that made my heart sink: “Mom, I’ll drop you off at home. I’ll pick up the phone later.” Just like that, it was over. I fought the urge to suggest he buy a protective case for his phone, hoping that maybe, just maybe, I’d get lucky again.
Who would have thought a broken phone could bridge the gap between a mother and her “baby”? Sometimes, it takes something broken to bring people closer together.
