Preschool educators are often unsung heroes in our society. If there are truly angels among us, they take the shape of preschool teachers. The recent pandemic has highlighted just how vital these educators are; they have gone above and beyond to ensure our children continue learning, showcasing creativity and resilience in the face of challenges.
My two sons developed a profound appreciation for their teachers early on, thanks to the exceptional preschool experiences they received. Both of them were fortunate to have dedicated, nurturing, and professional preschool educators. I firmly believe that no one has played a more crucial role in instilling a love for learning in our children than their preschool teachers.
Preschool teachers provide much more than just childcare. While caregivers in daycare settings are doing a commendable job and are deserving of respect, preschool educators have a different responsibility. In my son’s public preschool, the teacher is tasked with creating lesson plans and progress reports similar to those in elementary school. She must adhere to state educational requirements while also ensuring that all twenty children in her classroom are receiving the attention they need. Many preschool educators hold at least a bachelor’s degree in education or child development.
The range of knowledge and skills children bring to preschool can vary significantly. In a single classroom, you might find one child reading sight words while another struggles to identify letters. Preschool teachers must address the diverse educational and emotional needs of their students, who come from a variety of backgrounds. Their mission to prepare these young learners for kindergarten is no small feat, yet they rise to the occasion, and many of their students thrive.
Teaching preschoolers involves much more than simply teaching them the alphabet and numbers. The four- and five-year-olds in preschool are in a transitional stage, navigating the space between being a baby and a big kid. They may still need assistance with potty training and separation anxiety from their parents. Preschool teachers play an essential role in supporting the complex emotional needs of these young children while simultaneously preparing them for the next educational phase.
Every morning, some children may arrive in tears as their parents leave, but by the end of the day, I see twenty smiling faces sprinting out the door, proudly clutching their completed work.
One of my sons has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and is the only child in his class with this designation. Despite his early academic strengths, he has a speech delay and is autistic. His entire team believed that being in a mainstream classroom for a year would benefit his social skills. We entered this school year knowing it would be a unique experience, and I would have pursued a private program if necessary.
I can’t express enough how incredible his teacher, Mrs. Green, has been. He has truly thrived in preschool. She understands that his goals are not academic and consistently communicates his social progress with me. I always know how he is doing, whether he is facing challenges or excelling. His classroom aide, Ms. Taylor, has also been a tremendous support, making his preschool experience enjoyable for all of us.
Just this week, Mrs. Green sent me a picture of my son helping another child on the swings. He has learned to order his lunch in the cafeteria, wait patiently in line, and interact with his peers during group activities. His teacher and aide have successfully imparted essential lessons, and everyone looks forward to witnessing his continued growth as he transitions to kindergarten.
This impact is even more impressive than Mrs. Green’s teaching abilities, which are remarkable. Each lesson she provides sets the foundation for lifelong learning and helps children master basic concepts.
My older son, who is neurotypical, also had a transformative experience in preschool. Initially anxious about being away from me, he thrived in a private program tailored to his needs. His teacher recognized his strengths and paired him with peers who could benefit from his influence while also encouraging him to engage with children who could help him grow. To this day, my older son remains friends with his preschool teacher.
Regardless of whether a child is neurotypical or neurodivergent, the guidance of a dedicated preschool teacher can be invaluable. I eagerly anticipate my youngest child’s opportunity to experience preschool as well.
Sadly, the educated professionals who shape our youngest minds don’t always receive the recognition they deserve. I want to take a moment to celebrate preschool teachers everywhere. You are the builders of our children’s educational foundations. Your teachings provide the solid groundwork upon which their entire academic careers are constructed.
