A Kids Book About is a series tailored to assist parents in navigating challenging discussions with their young ones. Recent events have made parenting particularly daunting. Incidents of police violence, attacks on transgender youth by legislators, and the surge of violence against the Asian American Pacific Islander community have left many feeling overwhelmed.

In response, author Lily Nguyen has created a children’s book titled A Kids Book About Anti-Asian Hate. This book is available for free download and aims to address the rising tide of racism directed at the Asian community. You can access it at akidsbookabout.com.

The publisher designed this free resource to empower both adults and children to learn about, discuss, and take action against racial issues. Nguyen, whose family fled Vietnam during the war for a chance at a better life in America, resides in the San Francisco Bay area.

To ensure accessibility, the book is offered in multiple formats, allowing children to enjoy it on all major e-reading platforms, including iOS, Mac OS, iPad OS, and Kindle Fire. Additionally, it can be downloaded as a printable PDF.

The publisher encourages visitors to explore the nonprofit Stop AAPI Hate, an organization established in response to the alarming rise in xenophobic language following the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Kids Book About aims to bridge communication gaps between adults and children on crucial subjects. The series also collaborates with the nonprofit GenderCool, providing caregivers with tools to discuss topics like gender equality and inclusion. Parents often find it challenging to articulate their thoughts on such significant matters.

An upcoming title, A Kids Book About Immigration, addresses the question, “How do we explain to kids the realities of immigration?” It aims to clarify the complex decisions that lead individuals to leave their homelands in pursuit of new beginnings, reminding readers that we all share a common humanity.

Other titles in the series touch on themes such as racism, belonging, creativity, empathy, death, failure, systemic racism, shame, depression, white privilege, optimism, bullying, feminism, and a range of emotions.

For younger children, there is a related series called A Little Book About, which simplifies complex topics for elementary-aged kids. For instance, A Little Book About Family embraces inclusivity by stating, “Family is special because it looks different for each of us!” fostering a sense of belonging.

Parents interested in bringing these discussions into their communities are invited to host readings, which come with conversation starters to facilitate deeper discussions with children.
