Are you in need of a COVID vaccine? Why not combine your vaccination with an incredible getaway to the Maldives? As vaccine distribution ramps up across the U.S., many individuals are finding it challenging to secure appointments. To celebrate your vaccination milestone, consider a trip to the stunning Maldives, which has launched a new initiative to rejuvenate its tourism sector post-pandemic by offering COVID vaccines to travelers who have booked a hotel stay.
The Maldives, a picturesque island nation in Southeast Asia, has introduced its “3v” program, which stands for “visit, vaccinate, and vacation.” This initiative aims to make travel to the country more accessible, according to tourism minister Arif Hassan in an interview with a travel publication. Currently, tourists can enter the Maldives with a negative PCR test and proof of hotel accommodation. Vaccinated guests will soon enjoy unrestricted entry, possibly within the week, Hassan hinted.
Renowned for its breathtaking beaches and luxurious resorts perched over crystal-clear waters, the Maldives relies heavily on tourism, which accounts for 67 percent of its GDP. To facilitate the vaccine rollout, priority was given to hospitality workers. Presently, 90 percent of front-line tourism staff are vaccinated, and over half of the nation’s population has received at least one vaccine dose.
Hassan did not specify a timeline for the vaccination of visitors, noting that it will commence only after all residents have received their vaccinations. He assured that vaccine availability for travelers will not be an issue, although it’s yet to be determined if visitors will need to cover the cost of their vaccinations. “I don’t foresee supply being a challenge in the Maldives because of our relatively small population,” he stated. “The quotas we receive from various organizations and friendly nations will also assist.”
The Maldives aims to attract 1.5 million tourists this year. However, even if this goal is met, it may still fall short of the necessary tourism revenue following the significant downturn experienced in 2020. “Even if we hit our target this year, we will still face a revenue shortfall,” Hassan remarked. “But it’s certainly better than what we expected in late 2020.”
