A dedicated mother recently addressed Texas lawmakers, urging them to reject a bill that would label supportive parents of transgender youth as abusers. Parenting is an unending journey filled with love and concern, and it’s a responsibility that persists long after our children reach adulthood. To protect our kids, we often go to great lengths.

Amber Morris, a Texas mother of a transgender son, delivered a heartfelt plea to the Senate Committee on State Affairs, imploring them not to pass legislation that would criminalize parents who permit their transgender children to access certain gender-affirming medical care. “Honestly, these bills waste valuable time and taxpayer money, but since we’re here, let’s address this,” she stated. Reflecting on her son’s early years, she shared, “When he was just four, he asked if scientists could make him a boy.” Initially, Morris admitted she didn’t fully grasp her child’s identity. “I just knew he wasn’t like the other girls and that he was in pain,” she recounted.

Morris expressed her fears about the ramifications of her testimony, saying, “I’m terrified to be here today. I worry my words could be used against me if S.B. 1646 or S.B. 1311 passes, and I might lose my beloved son.” Senate Bill 1646 redefines child abuse to include parents or doctors who allow transgender minors to pursue hormone therapy or surgeries. Meanwhile, Senate Bill 1311 seeks to eliminate liability insurance coverage for gender-affirming treatments for certain minors.

Reflecting on her son’s social life, Morris proudly mentioned that her now-13-year-old is the “most popular boy in seventh grade,” attributing this to the unwavering support he receives from his family. “Taking that support away, or worse, separating him from us for breaking the law to provide it, would lead to catastrophic consequences,” she warned.

“If this legislation becomes law, that, senators, is child abuse,” Morris declared passionately. “I will reach out to each of you every time a transgender child loses their life to suicide, reminding you that their lives could have been saved, but you chose otherwise.” Texas Republicans argue that minors should be barred from gender-affirming healthcare, a decision that should ideally involve the child, their parents, and medical professionals. However, few senators were present to hear the opposition’s concerns.

Morris elaborated on the misconceptions surrounding gender-affirming surgeries, clarifying that such procedures are not performed on minors. She noted, “There are various options available for transgender youth, including reversible hormone blockers that have been clinically proven to save lives.”

Many parents, transgender children, and allies voiced their opposition to the proposed laws. To see Morris’s full testimony, click here.
