The bartender reportedly charged patrons $20 for each counterfeit card as vaccination rates increased and skepticism about the vaccine persisted among some individuals.
Authorities began investigating after receiving a tip that fake vaccination cards were being offered at the Old Corner Saloon in Clements. Undercover agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control visited the establishment multiple times throughout April, successfully purchasing the fraudulent cards, as reported by various media outlets.
The bar owner, identified as Jake Thompson, was taken into custody and faces serious charges, including felony identity theft and falsifying government documents, along with misdemeanor charges for altering medical records. During a search of the bar, officials discovered items linked to the illegal distribution of these vaccination cards. Additionally, they are looking into one of Thompson’s employees for similar activities.
San Joaquin County District Attorney, Laura Mitchell, expressed her disappointment, stating, “It’s disheartening to see individuals in our community blatantly disregard public health during a pandemic. Distributing or purchasing fake COVID-19 vaccine cards is illegal and puts everyone at risk.” The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has also indicated that disciplinary measures will be pursued against the bar, which may include the suspension or revocation of its liquor license. As of now, Thompson has not yet entered a plea.
