In a heartfelt statement, Anna Marie Johnson expressed her “heartbreak” over her divorce from John Smith, leaving many fans saddened by the news. This past year has been tumultuous for Smith, who revealed in December that he was entering rehab following a relapse related to his struggles with addiction. Now, both Smith and Johnson have announced their decision to part ways.
Through a spokesperson, Johnson, an artist and master’s candidate in a prestigious costume studies program, shared her feelings: “I am heartbroken that John has chosen to end our marriage. I wish him all the best as he continues on his path to recovery.” Smith’s spokesperson provided a much briefer comment stating, “John will not be making any further remarks as he focuses on his recovery and returning to work.”
Smith and Johnson tied the knot in 2014, with their friend, comedian Dan Lewis, officiating the ceremony. Known for incorporating his personal experiences into his standup, Smith often shared anecdotes about his marriage, making this announcement particularly poignant for his fans.
The news comes shortly after Smith announced a series of standup performances at City Winery in New York City, titled “From Scratch,” set to take place from May 10-14. This will mark his first return to the stage since his time in rehab.
Following his December announcement, Smith received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow celebrities alike. After spending 60 days in a treatment program, he has been relatively low-profile but has openly discussed his past struggles with addiction, sharing that he began drinking as a teenager for attention. “I was really outgoing, and then at 12, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again,” he reflected in a 2019 show.
As Smith prepares to take the stage again, it will be interesting to see how his recent experiences inform his performance. Despite the turbulence in his personal life, it’s encouraging to see him back in the spotlight.
