A group of former gardeners and maintenance staff who worked for celebrity influencer Kim Kardashian has initiated a legal case against her, accusing the reality star of breaching several California labor regulations. The plaintiffs assert that Kardashian failed to remit withheld taxes from their wages to the government.
The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles by a group that includes Andrew Ramirez, his brother Christopher Ramirez, his son Andrew Jr., along with Aron Cabrea, Rene Flores, Jesse Fernandez, and Robert Araiza. These individuals have all been employed on Kardashian’s property, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
Allegations of Labor Violations
The allegations go beyond tax issues; the former employees claim that they were not compensated for overtime hours, were denied meal and rest breaks, and were required to let a 16-year-old work over the legally allowed 48 hours per week. One worker reported being terminated after voicing concerns about these practices.
The complaint outlines a series of grievances, stating that the plaintiffs were not paid on time, did not receive mandatory meal and rest breaks, lacked a way to accurately record their hours, and were not reimbursed for job-related expenses. Additionally, they claim they were not paid their due wages upon leaving the job.
Kardashian’s Response
A representative for Kardashian stated to Page Six, “These workers were hired and compensated through a third-party vendor engaged by Kim to provide regular services. Kim is not part of the agreement between the vendor and its workers, thus she cannot be held accountable for how the vendor operates or the agreements it has made with its staff. Kim has consistently paid this vendor for their services and hopes for a swift, amicable resolution between the workers and the vendor.”
As of now, Kardashian is the only named defendant, but the lawsuit allows for the inclusion of additional defendants later. Frank Kim, the attorney representing the former staff, is also involved in a similar case against Kanye West, who is in the midst of divorcing Kardashian, with the couple currently living separately.
Kim remarked, “Wage theft and other workplace violations are rampant in Los Angeles. My firm is exploring other potential violations against these defendants, as well as other influential families and businesses, on behalf of everyday workers.”
