This new feature is entirely optional. If you enjoy tracking your like count, you can continue to do so. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, emphasized that the change is intended to enhance user satisfaction. “We want you to feel good about the time you spend on our apps, and this is a way to give you more control over your experience,” he stated in a recent tweet.
The platforms have been exploring this idea since about 2019. In a blog post, Instagram mentioned that the aim was to “depressurize” how people engage with the app. Feedback from users and experts indicated that not seeing likes could be beneficial for some, while others find it annoying, especially since like counts can indicate trends or popularity. Hence, they decided to offer the choice.
Interestingly, Instagram accidentally launched this feature for all users in March, resulting in mixed reactions. Some users appreciated the opportunity to post more genuinely without the pressure of likes, while others questioned the purpose of social media if there were no visible affirmations from peers.

How to Use the New Feature
To try this feature on your own posts, click on the image and then tap the three dots in the upper right corner. You’ll find the option to hide likes there. To manage likes on other users’ posts, head over to Settings and select the same option under “New Posts.”
