Summer is Approaching: Embrace Your Seasonal Style for EVERY Body

As summer draws near, it brings with it a wave of excitement. The school year wraps up, swimming pools open their gates, and the beach beckons us. Local drive-in theaters are ready for business, the ice cream truck is making its rounds, and it’s time to fire up the grill and savor the season’s delights. Whether it’s searching for the perfect watermelon or planning your July 4th barbecue, summer is on the horizon. And for those of us who are fully vaccinated, vacation plans might be in the works too.

As we gear up for summer, one universal truth stands out: the heat is about to crank up. While we relish outdoor fun, we’ll inevitably be sweating. For many, this discomfort can be exacerbated by the struggle to find comfortable clothing that feels right.

For someone like me, who identifies as plus-sized, summer has often meant wearing heavy clothes that made the heat even more unbearable, all in a bid to cover up my body. I can’t be the only one who has donned the unofficial outfit of cropped leggings and long-sleeve tops while others around me wore shorts and tank tops that seemed much more sensible for the sweltering heat.

But a couple of summers ago, I decided to change that narrative. No longer would I suffer in the heat simply because of societal pressures surrounding body image. I tossed aside restrictive bathing suits and any summer attire with sleeves longer than the elbow, vowing to prioritize my comfort over outdated notions of what I should wear. It’s baffling that those who are naturally insulated are expected to wear more!

Now, I dive into the pool without hesitation. I sport bikini tops with skirted bottoms because they make me feel fabulous. My wardrobe is filled with sleeveless dresses, shorts, tank tops, and crop tops. I’ve embraced my body and found peace with it, allowing me to dress for comfort and personal style rather than concealing what is mine.

Every body is a summer body. Whether you’ve lost weight or not, your body is perfect for shorts, tank tops, and swimsuits. All you need is the desire to wear them! Enjoying summer in your skin, just as it is, is essential. Don’t let arbitrary beauty standards dictate your summer experiences.

Feel the cool water on your sun-kissed skin, just like you did as a child racing to the water’s edge. Wear the swimsuit you love and relish the feeling of weightlessness that comes from floating in the cool water. Every moment is a chance to reclaim the joy of summer, whether it’s enjoying an ice cream cone at sunset or reliving childhood memories of popsicles and flip flops.

Remember, only a small fraction of the population fits the mold of the models we see in summer apparel advertisements. Most of us have been sold an unachievable standard of beauty, but our unique features—stretch marks, scars, and more—tell our life stories. They shouldn’t be deemed flaws; they are badges of survival.

This summer, as the sun begins to blaze, resist the urge to cover yourself in heavy fabrics. You deserve to feel the sun on your skin, the cool water caressing you, and to experience all the sights, sounds, and tastes of summer in clothing that makes you comfortable. Summer attire is meant for EVERY body—especially yours.
