The organization responsible for the event was established in the late 1800s by Charles Slayback, a former Confederate officer, and other white residents, restricting participation to white individuals until 1979. Kemper started her apology by sharing, “When I was 19, I chose to take part in a debutante ball in my hometown. The organization behind the event has a long-standing history of racism, sexism, and elitism. I was unaware of this at the time, but ignorance is not an excuse. I should have educated myself before getting involved.”

She firmly stated her stance against white supremacy, acknowledging her privilege: “I recognize that, because of my race, I benefit from a system that offers unequal justice and rewards.” Kemper expressed that, while it is tempting to dismiss online criticism, she realized the validity of the concerns raised, which align with the values of kindness and inclusiveness she strives to uphold.

Kemper concluded her message with an apology to those she may have disappointed, promising to listen, continue learning, and use her privilege to contribute to a better society. “Thank you for taking the time to read this,” she added.

Public Reaction

Despite the controversy surrounding her, some observers questioned why the focus was on Kemper rather than on her family members, both prominent bank CEOs, who also had connections to the organization. In response, the Veiled Prophet Organization issued a statement denouncing racism and affirming its commitment to civic progress and inclusion in St. Louis.
