Navigating birth control is not for the faint-hearted, that’s for sure. This week, moms are opening up in our Confessional about the challenges and frustrations that come with it. In a world still influenced by patriarchy, the experience of seeking birth control for those without a penis can be quite complex. With a range of options available, each comes with its own set of side effects, and as we age, finding the right birth control often becomes more difficult.
This week’s Confessional is dedicated to every mom out there grappling with the realities of birth control—your feelings are valid, and we provide a space for you to express your grievances without judgment.
“For the first time in our marriage, I can actually feel sex. I had no clue how much hormonal birth control was impacting me. I never even used to notice nipple play until last night.”

“Fun times—day 19 of bleeding after starting birth control to manage PMS and stop my periods.”
Confessional #25829746
“I began taking birth control to ease PMS symptoms and regulate my periods. I’ve been bleeding since April 7th!”
Confessional #25828829
“After starting birth control to address PMS, I’ve been bleeding longer than I did during my past periods. What the heck?!”
Confessional #25827912
“The unpredictable nature of period cycles on birth control is a nightmare. Sometimes they arrive too early, sometimes late, and other times, they just don’t show up at all. Seriously, science, do better.”
“I forgot to resume my birth control and lost 5 pounds! Sorry, hubby… this is way better than sex.”
Confessional #25800778
“My sex drive has vanished… I’m hoping it’s just the birth control, and that things will improve once I stop. With two under four, sleep takes precedence over intimacy.”
Confessional #25797918
“I’m frustrated that in the U.S., I have to undergo a yearly pelvic exam just to get my birth control pill prescription. Why aren’t these available over the counter yet? I still have to go for annual pap smears, when the science says they can be every 2-4 years. Talk about wasting medical dollars.”
Confessional #25271043
“Birth control gives me terrible side effects, so I can’t take them. Tried an IUD, but it tore through my uterus. I had to be in some awkward positions while they searched for it for five hours. My partner hates condoms, so I’m always stressed.”
Confessional #23802235
“Hormonal birth control can really take a toll on your body. Those with PCOS and endometriosis often have a particularly rough go with it. A copper IUD can be a viable alternative, but the insertion process can be downright painful.”
“I got an IUD four months ago and have been on my period for four months straight.”
Confessional #23312667
“I regret getting the Mirena IUD. It has completely altered my body, and the hormones are driving me crazy. I’ve gained 55 pounds, developed PCOS, and the IUD is stuck in my uterine wall, requiring surgery that I can’t afford. I feel like a prisoner in my own body.”
Confessional #20598898
“After getting the IUD, my cramps have intensified. I might pull it out myself tonight; I can barely handle the adjustment period. It’s been a month, and I haven’t even been able to enjoy intimacy.”
Confessional #19674130
“I removed the IUD a month ago, lost 10 pounds, and my skin is clearing up. Maybe inserting a foreign object in my body really does have negative effects, but so does pregnancy.”
Confessional #17865107
Long-term birth control can be invasive and costly, and birth control pills aren’t available over the counter. There are non-hormonal or less invasive options (like the patch, diaphragms, and natural family planning), but it shouldn’t be this challenging for us to find effective and reliable birth control methods.
While the pill is now considered safe for women over 35, it wasn’t always the case due to the high estrogen levels in older birth control pills that increased blood clot risks. Yet, dealing with birth control is still a hassle.
If you sometimes resent being on birth control (or all the time), know that you’re not alone. Your feelings are completely valid, and you’re welcome to vent in our Confessional anytime!
