Navigating life as a member of the LGBTQ+ community can often feel like an emotional rollercoaster. One moment, the overwhelming number of over 250 anti-LGBTQ bills being proposed in various state legislatures (with 17 already enacted) is enough to bring despair. The next, a flood of social media support for LGBTQIA+ individuals can reignite hope in humanity. Recently, after receiving a derogatory comment claiming that religion opposes LGBTQ+ identities, I shared a post highlighting that faith and allyship can coexist. The response was heartwarming—many people shared photos from their places of worship featuring rainbow flags and welcoming messages.
While we believe that love ultimately prevails, it’s not always easy to see. Rejection from loved ones or hateful messages from internet trolls can make it feel like the world is against you. Yet, there are times when love emerges in magnificent, tear-jerking ways. Grab a tissue for this one.
Confections, a bakery in Lufkin, Texas, recently experienced a whirlwind of emotions. It all began on June 2 when they shared a photo of their delightful heart-shaped sugar cookies adorned with rainbow frosting, accompanied by a message that read, “More LOVE. Less hate. Happy Pride to all our LGBTQ friends! All lovers of cookies and happiness are welcome here.” Unfortunately, this led to a significant drop in followers and a harsh cancellation of a five-dozen cookie order just as they had finished decorating.
In a subsequent post, they expressed their sadness, stating, “My heart is heavy. Honestly, I never thought a post that literally said more love less hate would result in this kind of backlash for a very small business that is struggling to stay afloat and spread a little cheer through baked goods.” The sorrow was palpable.
However, the tide turned overnight when word spread on social media about the canceled order. Confections found themselves inundated with calls, messages, and in-person orders, overwhelmed by the support that poured in. The line was out the door all day, and they sold out of not just the cookies from the canceled order, but everything in their shop. Yes, everything! They even had to close early on Friday just to bake more cookies to meet the soaring demand. Some customers showed up just to donate money, which Confections decided to forward to local animal shelters.
This narrative serves as a stark reminder of both the cruelty and compassion that exist in the world. While it’s infuriating to witness such negativity, it’s equally uplifting to see so many rallying in support of love and inclusion. One of the beautiful aspects of the queer community is the solidarity we share; we lift each other up and don’t let anyone fall. When adversity strikes, countless hands reach out to offer support. The queer community and its allies are among the most supportive groups you’ll find, despite some individuals who don’t share that ethos.
Yet, it often feels like we take two steps forward only to be pushed back. While allyship for the queer community has grown stronger and more visible, 2021 has also seen a record number of anti-LGBTQ bills introduced. Coincidentally, 2015, the year same-sex marriage was legalized, also saw a surge in anti-LGBTQ legislation. This is not a coincidence.
It’s crucial to demonstrate your support now more than ever, as those pushing these laws often do not understand or care about the impact they have. They cater to a specific voter base, promoting “family values” while oppressing those simply trying to live their lives. Acts of support, like those shown to Confections, are vital to showing lawmakers what the majority truly desires.
To those who oppose LGBTQIA+ rights, understand this: We will not be silenced. We will not fade into the background. Love will triumph. We are not broken or unnatural; we are made of love and strive to create a world that celebrates diversity. If you can’t embrace this message, you are on the wrong side of history.
Now, go enjoy a rainbow cookie!
