A Maryland mother and author has taken TikTok by storm after sharing nostalgic behind-the-scenes photos from her appearance in a Backstreet Boys music video.
Flashback to 1999
If you were jamming to “I Want It That Way,” sporting butterfly clips, and anxiously awaiting Y2K, life was pretty sweet. For Devon Daniels, a 17-year-old at the time, it was exceptionally amazing because she was actually featured in the “I Want It That Way” music video. Now a mother of four, Daniels recently shared her experience online, leading to her viral moment on TikTok.
Daniels, known in the video as the “iconic screaming queen,” has now turned 39, and her kids were initially indifferent about her brush with fame until her TikTok gained traction. In an interview with Buzzfeed, she revealed that she won the chance to be in the video through a radio call-in contest. Remember those? The ‘90s were a treasure trove of fun! Interestingly, she admitted that at the time, the Backstreet Boys were still gaining popularity, and she didn’t know much about them. “They were popular but…it was just before the true explosion, so I wasn’t even super familiar who the Backstreet Boys were. I knew the songs, but I didn’t necessarily know the band members.”
A Memorable Experience
Describing the experience as “incredible,” Daniels expressed her gratitude, saying, “the guys were amazing & I feel so privileged to be part of pop culture history. This was 1999 – I was 17 yrs old!!” Even Nick Carter himself commented on her video! In a follow-up clip, she shared that the moment the fans on set heard the song, they couldn’t stop singing it and recognized it would be a hit.
Her TikTok features delightful vintage photos capturing moments with Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, and Kevin Richardson—young men unaware of their impending fame. “They were so nice, and we were able to go up to them and ask if they would take a picture,” she recalled. Daniels has channeled her love of boybands into her romantic comedy book, “Meet You In the Middle,” proving that once a fan, always a fan.
