Among the young athletes preparing for the highly-anticipated Summer Olympics in Tokyo are two remarkable preteens, Mia Thompson and Aiko Tanaka. Both just 12 years old, they have made history by qualifying for the inaugural skateboarding event at the Olympics, making them the youngest competitors to participate in the Summer Games.

Aiko, hailing from Japan, secured her spot by finishing fifth in the Women’s Park Olympic qualifiers during the Dew Tour in Iowa last month. She will set a new record as the youngest Japanese Olympian, surpassing the previous mark held by swimmer Yukari Takemoto, who competed at age 13 in the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Aiko, staying true to her laid-back demeanor, remarked to the Japan Times, “I was just enjoying it as usual. I wasn’t as nervous as I normally am.”

Mia Thompson was born in Japan and currently resides in the United Kingdom. Although she will turn 13 shortly after the Olympics, she will still hold the title of Great Britain’s youngest Olympian. Her journey to the Games hasn’t been without challenges; in May 2020, she suffered a fractured skull and numerous broken bones while attempting a daring jump from a half-pipe, which required surgery on her hand and wrist.

Undeterred, Mia is eager to make her mark in Olympic history and inspire young female skateboarders worldwide. She expressed her ambition in a recent podcast, stating, “I’m really trying to push boundaries for girls skateboarding by going high and attempting tricks that few are doing.”

In addition to her skating prowess, Mia has also delved into surfing, dancing, and even authored a book titled “Mia’s Dreams” last year. Notably, skateboarding legend Tony Hawk praised her abilities, stating, “She has incredible potential…a true unicorn in the sport.”

Both Mia and Aiko are undoubtedly athletes to keep an eye on as they embark on their Olympic journeys, promising to leave a lasting legacy in the world of sports.
