Leslie Jones is back and ready to bring her entertaining commentary to the Summer Olympics! After delighting fans with her humor during the 2016 Summer Games and the 2018 Winter Olympics, she’s returning to Twitter with her unique insights and lively observations about the 2021 Olympic events.
The Tokyo Summer Olympics are set to take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021, while Team USA is currently competing in the Olympic Trials. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, Jones won’t be able to offer her live commentary at the actual games, but she’s still making her presence felt through her energetic live-tweeting.
“Look at this! They’re throwing spears in the Olympics!” Jones exclaimed while watching a women’s track and field trial on June 28, 2021. She had plenty to say about various events, especially when it came to gymnastics star Simone Biles.
During the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials on June 25, 2021, Jones reacted passionately as Biles awaited her score on the balance beam. Amidst controversy over the judges “devaluing” Biles’ groundbreaking move—so unique that it was named after her—Jones expressed her frustration. “You hear this? There’s controversy over a dismount that they had to name after her because no one else can do it!” she remarked. “Don’t be mad because this girl is so damn talented that you can’t even keep up with her flips!”
She continued, “How do you ‘devalue’ a jump? I’d just say, ‘Simone, we’re giving you a 10. We don’t know how to judge that cause nobody’s ever done it before, but you won the Olympics, OK?’” In another tweet, she joked, “Just give her the medal now; she already won the Olympics at the trials. They don’t understand that self-motivation is a powerful thing.”
Just two days later, Jones was back, emotionally celebrating Biles’ protégé, Jordan Chiles, who executed a stellar floor routine. “That’s no wobbles!” Leslie commented, showcasing her genuine enthusiasm for the athletes.
Jones’ commentary resonates because, as she puts it, “I actually care about the athletes.” Her best line about the trials so far? “Yo, I’m just so impressed.” And we agree!
