From The Confessional: Our Thoughts on the Upcoming School Year

Just a few months back, it seemed like we might finally be turning a corner. As COVID-19 cases plummeted and vaccines became widely available, we felt a glimmer of hope. Excitement filled the air as we scheduled our vaccination appointments, shared heartfelt selfies online, and eagerly planned long-awaited family reunions.

But then, everything came to a halt. The unvaccinated population caught up to those who were vaccinated. States began lifting mask mandates and businesses reopened, all while the Delta variant surged, creating a perfect storm. Now, in some areas of the U.S., the situation is worse than ever, and parents find themselves once again questioning the safety of sending their kids back to school.

Confessions from Overwhelmed Parents

Here are some confessions from parents who are feeling overwhelmed as we step into yet another chapter of this ongoing saga.

“I’m anxious about sending my child back to school next week. Masks aren’t required, and I need to work! Last year, masks were mandatory. Should I be more worried about my kids getting COVID or facing starvation and homelessness?” – Confessional #25844180

“With no masks required in schools and the highly contagious Delta variant spreading, it’s frustrating that some leaders wish they had better protected our children this winter.” – Confessional #25843908

“I wasn’t excited about sending my masked kids to school when masks were optional, but with the latest CDC findings on viral load, I’m really hesitant to send them at all.” – Confessional #25842918

Concerns about returning to school are legitimate, especially with some governors prohibiting schools from enforcing mask mandates. Can we really handle another year of virtual learning? Ugh.

“Here’s a thought… If you’d just get the vaccine, we wouldn’t have to worry about masks again, which you complain about too.” – Confessional #25843893

“I find it amusing that some people are panicking over mask mandates. We’ve been wearing them at school and work for over a year; it’s not the end of the world. If my 9-year-old can manage it, so can you.” – Confessional #25843845

“It’s disheartening that so many Americans refuse to wear masks just to protect others. I’m embarrassed by how the world views us.” – Confessional #25843169

“It frustrates me when people oppose quarantining and mask-wearing. Why can’t they just wear a mask and keep quiet?” – Confessional #25826360

Then there are those who continue to shout about their “rights,” while all the country is trying to do is move past COVID, avoid shutdowns, keep children in school, and save lives.

“I’m concerned about a COVID spike here in Texas. Our leaders are caving to pressure from extremists. I worry for those who work in public. I’m already seeing more people without masks during my rare outings. I just want to lock my doors and stay inside.” – Confessional #25822487

“I might have to quit my job to help my kids with distance learning. We were planning to send them back in person until our clueless governor declared it illegal to require masks and quarantine.” – Confessional #25843126

“Imagine how ignorant you have to be to oppose mandatory masks when you have a child under 12. It’s mind-boggling. Schools are under so much pressure to comply with this nonsense.” – Confessional #25842979

Influential politicians are exacerbating the situation by resisting mask and vaccine mandates. How can we aspire to be a “great” nation if our leaders ignore science and medical experts who dedicate their careers to saving lives?

“I heard someone say he’s done wearing masks and wants to live his life. It sounds like a spoiled child! So we went through all this for nothing? If he gets sick, I won’t be taking care of him. I’m living MY life.” – Confessional #25824928

“In my area, no one wears masks. We’re a ticking time bomb. I fear Palm Beach County is going to be a disaster. My husband and I are vaccinated, but our kids aren’t old enough. Come on, people!” – Confessional #25843046

“Online grocery shopping didn’t cut it, so I had to brave the store for the first time in 15 months. I was so disappointed by humanity. No masks in sight! Only 43% of the state is fully vaccinated, so I know not everyone in that store was!” – Confessional #25837888

“I’m relieved that Disney is reinstating mask requirements. Hopefully, this will push those hesitant about vaccines to reconsider. Viruses can only mutate if they have hosts!” – Confessional #25842807

If we could all just come together, that would be fantastic. We’re looking at you, governors of certain states who are currently floundering in this crisis. And to those who only care about themselves, take a cue from Disney. They’ve become a beacon of hope in this sea of selfishness and stupidity.

We hope to get through this as we did in 2020, but it appears that many more lives will be lost along the way, which is heartbreaking. In 2020, many of those losses were unavoidable, but now there’s a vaccine available. There are no more excuses. If you’re still refusing to get vaccinated, wear a mask, stay home, or practice social distancing while only caring about yourself, you’ve lost your way. If our country faces another shutdown, it will be on your shoulders.
