For as long as I can remember, I’ve held back, always saving my best for last. As a child, I collected erasers and would only take my second or third favorite to school, never wanting to use my absolute favorite. This pattern continued into adulthood—I reserved my cherished outfits, beloved accessories, and treasured books for some future date that often felt elusive.
Then I faced a life-altering crisis: I was diagnosed with cancer. This wake-up call made me question why I was waiting for the perfect moment to enjoy my favorites. What if that moment never came?
Recently, while choosing an outfit for my radiation treatment, it hit me. I had been saving my favorite clothes for an occasion that simply hadn’t happened. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, without any special reason to wear that floral maxi dress or those stylish heels. I realized I was waiting for joy to find me, rather than actively seeking it.
I’ve spent countless hours in medical settings, wearing those uncomfortable gowns, waiting for doctors and technicians to come in. Through X-rays, MRIs, and treatments, I found myself in a world dictated by medical necessity. On the rare days I had the freedom to choose, I needed to wear what made me feel good, not what I thought I should save for a better time.
After losing so much—my hair, my breasts—why would I continue to hold back on even the smallest joys? Life is too precious and fragile to wait for a perfect day.
In my chemotherapy chair, surrounded by fellow patients, I was constantly reminded that none of us is guaranteed tomorrow. Some of those around me would never ring the bell for completing treatment, and the weight of that truth hit hard. It urged me to seize the moment and make the most of my life, regardless of circumstances.
What brings you joy? What makes you smile? These are questions we often overlook in the hustle of daily life, convincing ourselves that we can enjoy them later. However, life is unpredictable and can change in an instant. I don’t want anyone to live in a state of postponement, waiting for a day that may never come.
Ultimately, the lesson is clear: embrace your joys now. Whether it’s the clothes you wear or the experiences you seek, don’t wait for a special occasion. Create the life you want to live.
