Absolutely, You Can — And Should — Rock a Mini Skirt!

If there’s one thing I find frustrating, it’s the restrictive fashion norms out there. In my view, the only guideline worth following when it comes to style is to wear what you love and what makes you feel fabulous.

I remember the ridiculous advice from fashion magazines suggesting that you shouldn’t wear white after Labor Day (seriously, winter whites are stunning) or that miniskirts are off-limits after 35 (do legs really have an expiration date?). That’s just nonsense! There are also rules about not wearing shorts to work or mixing metals with jewelry, and honestly, I’m over the expectation that bras should always match our outfits to avoid showing through. Everyone knows most women, or people with breasts, wear bras—so what’s the fuss if someone sees a glimpse?

Well, it’s 2023, and it’s clear those outdated rules are just plain silly.

No one should dictate what you can or cannot wear. One trend making a grand comeback is the miniskirt. While I’ve always believed they never truly went out of style (I’m 46 and still wear them like I did at twelve, thank you very much), they’re definitely back in the spotlight.

The miniskirt has a long history, first appearing in the 1960s. I recall the neon and leather minis of the 1980s and the plaid, pleated styles of the 1990s. They’re a fun addition to any wardrobe—comfortable, versatile, and perfect for dressing up a casual T-shirt while allowing a nice breeze to cool you down.

I recently picked up a sweatshirt material mini that’s more comfortable than any shorts I own (and let’s face it, no one enjoys dealing with wedgies). I’m also in love with the look of a flirty mini paired with a blazer or an oversized cardigan.

The possibilities with these adorable little skirts are endless, which is why I’m thrilled they’re trending again in 2023. According to Heuritch, an analytics platform for fashion brands, miniskirt sales are expected to increase. “This fall, we predict a rise of +8% in miniskirt sales among women in the US and +10% in Europe.”

And remember, miniskirts are for every body type—don’t ever think you’re too old, too big, or too anything to wear one. If you have a body and want to wear a miniskirt, go for it!

While this trend has gained traction among Gen Z, it doesn’t mean they’re the only ones who can wear them. This playful skirt looks fantastic on people of all ages and sizes, so if you want to flaunt one, do it confidently.

I’m loving this cute mini on @jenniferrose. And check out @stephanieshoestyle for an excellent way to transition your favorite miniskirt from summer to fall—perfect for those chilly mornings that warm up in the afternoon only to cool down again at night. This button-up miniskirt on @madisonstyles is an amazing choice to showcase your favorite new boots. Pair your mini with tights like @katrina.style did for a colorful addition to your outfit.

So, if you’re feeling the urge to grab a mini (or two) off the rack, whether for work, errands, or lounging at home, don’t let anything hold you back. Wear that miniskirt if you want to!
