Amber Lane, renowned for her roles as an actor, director, and writer, is also recognized as a feminist advocate. “I don’t even control that. If that’s how the world sees me, I’ll embrace it,” she remarks.
Her impressive acting portfolio includes projects like Joan of Arcadia and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, alongside the FX series Y: The Last Man, streaming September 13. While her career is notable, her identity as an activist is even more profound. She speaks thoughtfully on issues of sexual harassment and racism, and as a mother, she is increasingly concerned about the future, particularly in light of Texas’ recent abortion legislation. This law prohibits abortions after six weeks and empowers private citizens to sue anyone who aids in the process.
“I had been preparing for this moment for some time, having closely followed the pro-life movement’s strategic efforts over the last three decades,” she shares. Yet, despite her deep concerns, she remains cautiously hopeful.
When did you first realize: This is really happening?
“I started to feel anxious when many of my lawyer friends began discussing it. I had braced myself for the worst, but then it felt like everyone around me suddenly realized, ‘Whoa, this just happened.’ It’s disheartening, frightening, and upsetting. The punitive nature of this law is particularly troubling. After all, most people don’t even know they’re pregnant at six weeks. The only ones who might know are those undergoing in vitro fertilization, and they aren’t seeking abortions.”
She emphasizes the absurdity of it all, expressing frustration over the law’s punitive aspects — a “bounty” on women’s heads — and the hypocrisy from those who advocate for personal choice regarding vaccination and mask-wearing yet impose restrictions on women’s bodies.
“It’s demoralizing, and maintaining an optimistic outlook is challenging,” she admits. “This situation serves as a stark reminder that we cannot afford to become complacent. We must remain vigilant. The efforts to overturn rights over the past 30 years highlight the dedication of those opposing progress. My hope is that this situation ignites a larger movement, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding our rights and recognizing that nothing is guaranteed, including the right to vote.”
Has becoming a mother intensified your drive?
“I’ve always been passionate about these issues. Motherhood has reinforced the urgency; we can’t afford to pause. If we don’t continue to fight, things will only deteriorate. We must vote those who don’t represent us out of office and engage in local elections. I constantly advocate for organizations like Fair Fight. If you’re tired of donating or making calls, take a moment and keep going. This fight is for our children and for all kids, especially those outside progressive areas.”
How do you raise engaged, informed children without instilling fear?
“That’s a great question. My daughter is four and a half, and we participated in significant protests after George Floyd’s murder. I explained the events in an age-appropriate way, discussing differences in how people treat one another and even addressing concepts like death. It’s crucial to have these conversations early about racism and sexism. They need to understand these issues because they will be the ones navigating this world.”
Do you choose specific language when discussing serious topics with her?
“I speak to her as I would to anyone else. I respect her feelings and her autonomy. For example, during a bath, she playfully commented on my body, and I made sure to validate her humor while maintaining our closeness.”
While discussing pressing issues like abortion and voting, let’s also highlight your upcoming show!
“It’s based on the acclaimed graphic novel Y: The Last Man, which depicts a world where a pandemic suddenly wipes out all male mammals with a Y chromosome, leaving just one man. It explores the complex relationships among women in this new reality.”
