She previewed the first two episodes of the show while cuddled up in bed with her child, Jessie, who appears in the series. It’s traumatizing and triggering,” she reflected. “They captured the essence of living in an emotionally abusive environment perfectly.”

A later screening with family and friends proved to be a more uplifting experience. “It was fantastic,” Lila shared. “We all enjoyed sushi and ramen while watching it together. Everyone cheered when I introduced the screening. My seven-year-old exclaimed, ‘Mom, your face was on TV!’”

Hope for Impact and Change

Despite the emotional turmoil the show might evoke, Lila remains hopeful for its impact. “I want those living in poverty to find validation and feel seen through this series,” she expressed. “I wrote the book because I didn’t see my story represented authentically in media, and I wanted others like me to know they’re not alone.”

Lila also wishes for those who are financially secure to gain insights about the struggles of minimum-wage work and the systemic barriers that perpetuate these issues. “I hope they take this knowledge into the voting booth to support those who advocate for the homeless and strive for change.”

Continuing the Journey

Currently, Lila is working on a new book titled Class, exploring the obstacles low-income individuals face in pursuing higher education. She continues to travel, sharing her experiences from Maid and advocating for those with similar stories. “I’m not naturally inclined to put myself out there,” she admitted. “But I see the value in advocating for others and opening doors for them.”

Maid is now a 10-episode limited series on Netflix featuring actors Emma Grace, Liam Foster, and Sarah Mitchell. It premieres on October 1.
