During the interview, Harper disclosed that she secretly copied thousands of pages of Facebook’s internal research. The root of the problem, she argues, lies within the algorithm. “When you scroll through your feed, you might only see a limited number of posts, but Facebook has a vast array of content available,” she said. “The algorithm selects content based on what you’ve previously engaged with.”
This is where the issue becomes complex. “Facebook optimizes for engagement, but their own research shows that the most engaging content is often hateful or divisive. It’s easier to provoke anger than other emotions,” Harper stated. “If they were to adjust the algorithm for safety, users would spend less time on the platform, click on fewer ads, and consequently, Facebook would generate less revenue.”
“More content consumption equals more profit for Facebook,” she added. “People tend to engage more with posts that evoke strong emotional reactions. The more anger they encounter, the more they interact and consume.”
As Harper’s revelations gained traction, both Facebook and Instagram experienced outages, possibly a much-needed break for teens inundated with harmful content.
