You do need to reduce your profit margins, but if your goal is to exploit marginalized communities, you’re probably not in this for the right reasons,” she asserts.
Kaavia, naturally, is one of the taste testers. According to her mom, her preferences have evolved as she’s gotten older. When asked if Kaavia is a picky eater, Mason responds, “Not really, but it changes daily. This morning, she wanted pancakes and bacon. We poured her milk, which she usually loves, and suddenly she said, ‘No milk.’ What? Huh? She’s now in school, so her friends have different tastes and bring their lunches. Her language and preferences shift every day,” Mason notes.
Personal Growth and Healing
Everything Mason undertakes is intentional and personally significant. “Most of my extended family lives in food deserts,” she reflects, having been born and raised in Nebraska. “This aligns with my other efforts: making entertainment more accessible, improving clothing accessibility, and launching a baby company soon. And food. Snacks. It’s my small contribution to what I’m passionate about.”
She wasn’t always so vocal, but one of her most significant traumas reshaped her perspective: at 19, she was raped by a robber while working at a retail store. “At first, it wasn’t a choice. When the local newspaper covered my assault, they included so many details that I was outed. I didn’t get to control my own narrative,” she recalls. “As people began to inquire about it, and as I gained fame — breaking out as Isis in the iconic cheerleading film Bring It On — the scrutiny intensified. Gradually, I became more comfortable sharing not only the polished images with the public but the authentic person behind them.”
“I realized that for many years, I was deeply invested in a façade. I wasn’t genuinely interested in honesty; revealing the truth meant exposing my vulnerabilities and weaknesses,” she reflects. “Over the last 30 years, therapy has helped me understand that sharing my truth fosters community, and it allows me to find clarity within myself.”
