The much-anticipated trailer for the revamped version of Home Alone, titled Home Sweet Home Alone, has finally arrived. For years, the original Home Alone has been a cherished part of my holiday traditions, and I always find time to watch it as December rolls in. So, when I learned that Disney+ was giving this classic film a fresh twist, I was all ears. I’m intrigued…

As the trailer opens, we hear, “Twas the night before Christmas vacation, and the festivities were in full swing. The family was off on their holiday trip but forgot one little detail…” Home Sweet Home Alone follows the familiar storyline (a child is left home alone while the family goes on vacation), but this time the kid is British (instead of from Chicago), the family is headed to Tokyo (not Paris), and the intruders are the delightful Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney (rather than the menacing Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern).

Is it reminiscent of the Home Alone you know? Not exactly. Will the British accents be a bit jarring? Perhaps, but I’m going with the flow. Will I binge-watch this film when it debuts on Disney+? Absolutely.

While Home Alone wouldn’t be the same without the iconic Pesci as the clumsy yet frightening burglar, Kemper and Delaney bring their own charm as a couple of quirky thieves trying to reclaim a priceless heirloom. “I can’t go to jail, honey. I’d last only 30 seconds in general population. That’s where fresh fish get got,” Delaney’s lovable burglar exclaims. Kemper, through clenched teeth, retorts, “Nobody here is getting got!”

Archie Yates portrays the sharp-witted Max Mercer, who—unlike Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister—is fully prepared for an unexpected home invasion when his parents jet off to Japan without him. Aisling Bea plays Max’s mom, channeling Catherine O’Hara’s spirit as she desperately tries to convince an airline attendant to get her back home quickly. The cast also features Kenan Thompson, Tim Simons, Pete Holmes, Devin Ratray, Ally Maki, and Chris Parnell.

And for those naysayers lamenting the need for a Home Alone reboot, uhm actually there are five (yes, five!) films in the Home Alone franchise. This reboot was definitely in the cards, even though many fans drifted away from the series after the second film (Home Alone: Lost in New York), when Culkin stepped out of the spotlight.

There’s even a nod to the original, with the mischievous cousin Buzz McCallister (played by the actor Devin Ratray) returning as a police officer.

Home Sweet Home Alone is set to premiere on November 12, 2021, exclusively on Disney+.
