If you’ve ever thought about abandoning your little ones in coach to snag a first-class upgrade on a flight, you’re not alone—about 40% of parents feel the same way. Traveling with kids can turn into a stressful ordeal, and the thought of a little luxury can be tempting.
Flying in general is a universally acknowledged hassle, and the stress level skyrockets when you add children to the mix. A recent survey revealed parents’ honest feelings about air travel with their kids, particularly how many would be willing to leave them behind in coach for a more comfortable first-class experience.
The survey found that parents are particularly cautious about letting their children fly alone in coach. Less than 10% would leave a child of any age, and similar numbers said they wouldn’t leave kids under 5. The consensus seems to be that children aged 13 and older are appropriate for being left in coach while parents enjoy the luxury of first class.
Among the parents surveyed, 76% reported having flown with their children, but 55% expressed anxiety about doing it again. One-third mentioned their kids throwing tantrums at the airport, and 36% admitted feeling embarrassed by their children’s behavior during family trips. Interestingly, over half of the parents—in a survey conducted by Medicspot, a private COVID testing company—felt sympathy for fellow travelers and suggested that part of the plane be designated for families with children.
The spokesperson for Medicspot noted that while family vacations are enjoyable, the travel experience can be daunting for parents. “We love taking our kids on holiday with us, but given the opportunity, many of us would relish the chance to enjoy some peace and luxury at 30,000 feet.”
