A recent research project published in Current Biology by a team from Oregon State University found that 64% of cats exhibit what is known as a “secure” attachment style. This means they don’t seem distressed when their owners leave the room and enjoy a balance of attachment and exploration upon their return. On the other hand, approximately 35% of cats displayed insecure attachment styles, showing signs of stress until their humans returned, often resulting in behaviors that ranged from clinginess to avoidant actions.
Anyone who has witnessed their cat sulk after being temporarily separated knows that these furry friends take their roles as companions quite seriously. The researchers observed the behaviors of 70 kittens and 38 adult cats in a controlled setting, monitoring their reactions to being briefly separated from their owners.
Interestingly, some behaviors were categorized as “disorganized,” which might just be a fancy term for the less-than-pleasant acts of protest we sometimes endure, like finding a surprise in our shoes after taking out the trash.
