Netflix is launching a global book club, hosted by the enthusiastic and talented star of Orange Is The New Black, Zara Smith. Unlike that other book club that you might have been unceremoniously removed from for not reading Chapter 5 by Thursday, Netflix guarantees that this book club is different and much more relaxed. “No pressure, no obligations, and certainly no ‘must-dos,’” the company assured. “Whether you’ve already devoured the book or are planning to read it after watching, it’s all your choice! Remember: There’s no wrong way to engage with this. We’re here to entertain you however you prefer.”
Smith will lead discussions with creators, actors, and authors in a segment called “But Have You Read the Book?” The inaugural book featured in November is Passing, set to premiere as a film on November 10, 2021. “Based on Nella Larsen’s novel, Passing tells the story of two Black women (played by Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga) who can pass for white. Despite their shared history, they each choose to live on opposite sides of the racial divide in 1929 New York,” the announcement details.
