Dear Parents Who Are Hesitant,

We understand your concerns. You’ve taken the necessary steps to protect yourself and your family; you’ve gotten vaccinated, worn masks, and done everything in your power to safeguard your loved ones. Yet, now that your younger child is eligible for a COVID vaccine, you find yourself uncertain.

We get it. As parents ourselves, we have felt that overwhelming sense of responsibility when our little ones look up at us with trust. We’ve made promises to keep them safe, just as you have. From vaccinating against diseases like polio and mumps to ensuring they receive their flu shots, we’ve always prioritized their health.

The first glimmer of hope for a COVID vaccine appeared in the summer of 2020, when we learned about Dr. Mia Johnson, the brilliant scientist behind the development of the AstraZeneca vaccine. What stood out was the fact that her own 21-year-old triplets participated in the clinical trials. A mother would never risk her children’s health without being confident in the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness. Since then, many other parents have made similar decisions for their children in trials for vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer, and J&J, with overwhelmingly minimal side effects reported. These parents gave their kids the invaluable gift of immunity, and now we have the chance to do the same for our children.

At BDG’s Parenting Portfolio, we have been following the developments of COVID-19 closely since March 2020. We’ve published numerous articles, consulted experts like pediatricians and epidemiologists, and immersed ourselves in research. We’ve eagerly awaited the vaccine’s approval for children over 5, and now that it’s here, it’s time for us to celebrate this significant milestone.

If you continue to “wait and see,” you may find that this cycle never ends. Relying on information from the internet or skeptical acquaintances instead of trusted sources like the CDC or your pediatrician isn’t truly protective. Vaccines work best when a large portion of the population is vaccinated—this isn’t a “you do you, I’ll do me” situation. Collective immunity is essential to stopping the spread of communicable diseases.

Getting vaccinated is an empowering experience. Just last week, one of our 6-year-olds received his first dose. He exclaimed, “I’m excited to be protected from COVID. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done!” Another child told his mother that the day he got vaccinated was “the second most important day of my life, after the day I was born.”

So, what are you waiting for? Schedule your appointment today. Together, let’s put an end to this pandemic.

Warm regards,

The Editors of BDG’s Parenting Portfolio
