I have to admit, I didn’t expect to enjoy Grace & Frankie as much as I have. In all honesty, I wasn’t even planning to watch it. However, during a binge-watching break and in search of something new, I decided to give it a shot. Fast forward a few weeks and six-plus seasons later, and I’m officially a huge fan.
About the Show
For those unfamiliar with the show, the main characters, Grace and Frankie—played by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin—are two women whose husbands, who happen to be law partners, have recently come out as lovers. After two decades of tolerating each other at best and outright disliking each other at worst, the end of their 40-year marriages forces them into an unexpected cohabitation in their stunning shared beach house.
To be honest, the show follows a pretty typical sitcom structure, which makes it somewhat predictable. Yet, with Frankie’s frequent marijuana use and Grace’s sharp humor, it definitely has its unique edge.
Aging Gracefully
What I appreciate most is that Grace and Frankie truly embody what it means to “age gracefully.” Sure, they face their share of health issues and moments of forgetfulness, but they’re still out there living life to the fullest. They even launch a company creating vibrators for women with arthritis—how’s that for bold?
Grace & Frankie fills a significant gap in the entertainment world. Older women are often inaccurately portrayed, either as sweet, cookie-peddling grandmothers or as bumbling, forgetful individuals who can’t even handle grocery shopping. It’s a tired trope.
Despite their flaws, Grace and Frankie are a refreshing change because they refuse to fade into the background simply because they’ve reached a certain age. They have vibrant social lives, are actively pursuing their careers, and embrace their sexuality with confidence.
They represent #AgingGoals, #FriendshipGoals, #ForgivenessGoals, and #BeWhoYouAreGoals all rolled into one.
Character Aspirations
If I’m being completely honest, I aspire to be like Frankie when I grow up. Sure, she might be a bit eccentric at times, but her heart is pure gold. She loves fiercely and embraces her emotions wholeheartedly. If I can’t be Frankie, I definitely want to be her friend.
The Supporting Cast
The supporting cast, including Grace and Frankie’s adult children and ex-husbands, adds to the entertainment. Their families are a mix of dysfunction and challenges, with some characters showing less-than-stellar behavior. However, there’s an underlying empathy for their flaws, and they learn to accept one another for who they truly are. They live by the mantra that family is what you make it.
While it may follow a traditional sitcom format, it’s undeniably a joy to watch. I’m eagerly anticipating the second half of the show’s seventh and final season, which is expected to drop in early 2022.
