As the holiday shopping season wraps up, many parents are left wondering where to conceal all those gifts until they’re ready to be wrapped and placed under the tree. A recent survey has revealed that our go-to hiding spots may not be as clever as we think, and it seems that kids are likely aware of where to find their presents.

Conducted by the storage company Neighbor, the survey found that the bedroom closet tops the list of popular hiding spots, with 53% of respondents admitting they stash gifts there. Other common locations include spare rooms, coat closets, under the bed, and the trunk of a car.

Unfortunately for parents, these favored hiding places are not exactly secrets. When asked where they search for hidden gifts, a significant 25% of participants indicated the bedroom closet as their first stop. This was followed by 22% who check under the bed, 15% who look in the trunk of a car, and 9% who investigate coat closets. Interestingly, only 6% of respondents mentioned spare rooms as a place they search, suggesting that those using this location may be on to something.

The survey also revealed that nearly half of those surveyed (49.9%) reported having their hidden holiday gifts discovered at some point. However, this still means that many parents manage to keep their gifts under wraps, albeit just barely.

If you’re in search of less obvious hiding spots for your holiday haul, consider these alternatives: the attic, where just 2% of hidden gifts were found; the basement, also with a 2% discovery rate; and the garage, where only 3% of gift recipients uncovered their surprises.

Of course, another option is to simply wrap the gifts and place them under the tree right away. However, this requires a quick turnaround—21% of people reported that it took less than an hour for their hidden gifts to be found, while another 8% admitted to being caught in the act of wrapping.

Ultimately, it seems that most parents aren’t overly stressed about the possibility of their gifts being discovered, as 60% of moms indicated they enjoy the thrill of hiding presents, finding it adds a fun element to the holiday season.
