Our ’90s hearts just leaped with excitement upon the announcement of the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show. A magical trailer has just been released, showcasing an impressive lineup of ‘90s icons: Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar.
The video opens with a young Slim Shady observing his present self as Eminem, performing his hit “Rap God.” Following this, Snoop Dogg is seen cruising in his car, jamming to “The Next Episode.” Then, the stunning Mary J. Blige, donned in a blue coat and fitted jeans, graces the screen during a photoshoot with “Family Affair” playing in the background. Kendrick Lamar makes his appearance next, working on his next hit as “Humble” plays.
Each artist receives a call from Dr. Dre, who is strategizing like a chess master, urging his chosen crew to drop everything and converge at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles for the halftime performance. The video, titled “The Call,” was crafted by F. Gary Gray, director of Straight Outta Compton, ensuring its cinematic brilliance (and likely at a considerable production cost).
The trailer also features “California Love,” paying homage to the legendary Tupac, and wraps up with “Still D.R.E.” Collectively, these artists boast 43 Grammys and 22 Billboard No. 1 albums—remarkably, they have never shared a stage before. We can only hope the entire show consists of their greatest hits, allowing us to sing along, even if it’s off-key.
“Legends like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg were pivotal in shaping the West Coast hip hop scene. Bringing them back to LA, alongside Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar, will be an unforgettable celebration of hip hop’s influence today,” stated Alex Greene, VP of Marketing at Pepsi, when the lineup was revealed.
Traditionally, the Halftime Show highlights one major act, occasionally featuring a surprise guest or two. This format harkens back to the 2004 performance that included Jessica Simpson, Janet Jackson, Diddy, Nelly, Kid Rock, and Justin Timberlake all on stage together.
The Super Bowl is set to air on Feb. 13. Whether it’s the Packers, Niners, Rams, or Tampa Bay Bucs competing, many will undoubtedly tune in just for the spectacular show. Our fondness for the ’90s is truly overflowing!
